Theatre - a gregarious form that combines arts, dance, music, literature to create masterpieces that fire away the imagination of the audience.  At the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival watch all kinds of theatre…. tragedy, comic humour. Veterans and amateur directors put together plays across many genres and languages.

Our thematic for the 2014 festival is ‘RANG BARAAT’.

We look forward to seeing you at our theatre venues at NGMA, Horniman Circle Garden, Max Mueller Bhavan and Artists' Centre.

"Voices" are skits and songs performed by 7th standard government and private school children. The topics being… Life in a Metro - which describes the life of a child in a city like Mumbai, Young or Dabbang – deals with the emotional aspect of teenagers and Life Se Panga Mat Le Yaar – the ills of tobacco.

“Breakthrough the Barriers - Teen Kanya" is a multi media testimonial performance of spoken words and songs. It is a powerful piece shedding light on women’s issues, drawing from Rabindranath Tagore’s protagonist women who were agents of change in their eras. The stories of Charu, Bimala and Binodini represent journeys of self-actualisation as Renaissance women who breakthrough the barriers of their milieus and pave new frontiers for a new era of women in Bengal and beyond.

There are prevalent values in our society that are binding, but there is a limit to everything. A middle class woman can no longer be treated like a doormat. The superhit comedy revolves around the relationship between the main protagonists, Dr. Pawan Somma and his wife Pooja.

"Postcards from Bardoli" is an act on the worst-ever recorded wave of farmer suicides in history that captures young Mihir's attention. Taking a cue from the historical Bardoli Satyagraha in 1928 and drawing inspiration from its hero, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Mihir embarks on a perilous journey with his hapless and flawed father looking on. The play is a timely reminder that the goals of Swaraj are yet to be attained. For those who learn nothing from History are condemned to repeat it.

You will witness the fluctuating fortunes, vulnerable relations, compromised values and the constant presence of city’s force in one’s life.

“Imaan” is a one act play that starts when the protagonist Hussain’s grandson comes home in tears after being teased by his class mates as Pakistani and he questions his grandfather of his decision of not going to Pakistan. The play concludes on the day of 1992 Babri Masjid demolition when the whole country is rocked by riots and his grandson is missing! The Play weaves through 1992 and 1947 and the lives of the Indian Muslims who chose India and not Pakistan as their Homeland.
